these cast iron firebacks have been used since colonial times to increase the radiant heat output from an open fireplace. I'm sitting infront of mine now enjoying the warmth. The traditional pineapple symbol of hospitality is a nice added touch. A great addition to any wood burning fireplace--gas too.
