When it comes to elevating your outdoor living space, nothing adds ambiance and warmth quite like a fire pit. While traditional wood burning pits have their charm, gas fire pit inserts offer convenience, cleanliness, and customization.

Whether you want to upgrade your existing outdoor fire pit or custom-build one from the ground up, a gas fire pit insert simplifies your project.

What is a Gas Fire Pit Insert?

Gas fire pit inserts can include:

  • Individual fire pit burners
  • Complete, all-in-one gas fire pit kits

When planning a fire pit project, one of the first decisions you’ll face is whether to purchase a gas fire pit burner or a gas fire pit burner kit. While the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they represent different products that serve distinct purposes in the fire pit construction process.

Understanding the differences between them will help you make the best choice for your needs, project complexity, and budget.

Gas Fire Pit Burners

A gas fire pit burner is the main component responsible for producing flames in a gas-powered fire pit. It connects to the fuel source — either Natural Gas or Propane — and typically consists of a metal ring, bar, or pan with strategically placed holes that allow gas to escape and ignite.

Burners come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to fit every fire pit enclosure, including:

🔥 Use case: When you purchase just a burner, you’re only getting this core flame-producing element. It’s the best choice for experienced DIYers, or contractors who plan to build a fully customized fire pit and already have access to the other necessary components.

Gas Fire Pit Kits

A gas fire pit burner kit, on the other hand, is a more comprehensive package that includes not only the burner but also many of the essential components needed for installation and safe operation.

While the exact contents can vary between manufacturers, a standard burner kit includes:

  • The gas burner
  • A burner pan or tray
  • A flexible gas line and fittings
  • An air mixer (for Propane setups)
  • A key valve (for match-lit ignitions) or an electronic ignition system
  • An owner’s manual with installation instructions

🔥 Use case: Complete burner kits are designed to simplify the building process and are especially appealing for homeowners or DIYers who want a turnkey solution without sourcing each part individually. They’re also a great option for those who want the assurance that all components are compatible and tested together for safety.

How to Choose the Best Option for Your Fire Pit Project

Experience Level

If you're confident working with gas lines, valves, and flame adjustment, a standalone burner may be enough.

However, if this is your first fire pit project or you want a faster and safer installation, a burner kit is your best bet.

You may even need to hire a licensed and trained gas professional to install your fire pit for you, depending on the fuel source you choose. Natural Gas installations often require a professional, especially if you don’t already have a gas line in your outdoor space.

Project Complexity

Are you building a completely custom fire feature from scratch, or are you retrofitting an existing pit?

Burner kits are great for standardized installations, while standalone burners are better suited for unique designs where custom sizing or layout is important.

Fuel Type Compatibility

Whether you choose a burner or kit, make sure it’s compatible with your chosen fuel type— Natural Gas or Propane.

Propane systems often require additional components like air mixers, which are usually included in kits but may need to be purchased separately with standalone burners.

Budget

Burners alone are more affordable upfront, but the cost of sourcing additional parts can add up.

Kits may cost more initially but save time and ensure you get all the necessary components.

Safety and Compliance

A well-matched kit ensures all components are compatible and meet safety standards, which is especially important for Propane systems.

This can also make inspections and permitting easier if required in your area.

Fire Pit Burner FAQs

Can I convert my burner from propane to natural gas (or vice versa)?

Some burners are convertible with a proper conversion kit, but you’ll need to check the manufacturer specifications and consult a licensed professional for conversions.

What’s the best type of fire pit media to use with my burner?

The best media type depends on your style preferences. Gas fire pit burners can accommodate a range of different media, including:

Look through our Fire Pit Media Buying Guide for more details on each media style.

What’s the difference between a match-lit, push-button piezo, and electronic ignition system?

  • Match-lit: Simple, cost-effective, manually lit with a lighter.
  • Push-Button Piezo: Easy and instant, like firing up a grill, and doesn’t require access to a power supply in your outdoor space.
  • Electronic: Push-button or remote-controlled ignition that often includes safety shut-off features. Ideal for convenience and commercial use, but it does require access to a power supply.

How many BTUs should my burner have?

Each burner is rated for a specific British Thermal Unit (BTU) capacity. It’s important to make sure your gas line can handle the BTU capacity of your burner, otherwise you’ll end up with low flames and heat.

Whether you’re using an existing gas line or installing a new one, the professional you’re working with will need to know the BTU capacity of your burner to ensure your gas line is the right size.

Does my fire pit need ventilation?

Yes, your fire pit should have at least two built-in vents (one on each side of the enclosure). Ventilation allows for proper airflow and water drainage. It also prevents gas and heat from building up inside of your fire pit.
