Nothing transforms a backyard quite like a cozy fire pit. Whether you’re roasting marshmallows for s’mores, hosting a get-together with friends, or simply relaxing outside in the fresh air, an outdoor fire pit elevates the mood.

Thinking of building a fire pit yourself? You don’t have to be a professional landscaper. Creating your own fire pit isn’t too complicated — and the total cost is less than you think. Below, we’ll walk you through three simple DIY fire pit ideas using our most popular kits, plus materials you can find at your local Home Depot, Lowe's, or even Amazon.

Gather your tools and roll up your sleeves, it’s time for a backyard makeover!

#1: Modern Gas Fire Pit with an Unfinished Enclosure Kit by HPC

If you want a modern, smokeless fire pit that works with Natural Gas or Propane, HPC’s unfinished gas fire pit kit is a great option. Available in several sizes, the kit comes with everything you need for a hassle-free DIY project, including step-by-step instructions.

The kit includes a welded, 22-gauge steel frame and Hardie board shell, creating a strong foundation that will outlast any kind of weather condition, even corrosive coastal environments. You can finish the outside of your new fire pit any kind of material you'd like to match your outdoor living space. Layer different stone colors for unique, eclectic style or use tile, stacked stone, bricks, or metal.

All gas fire pits need media. With this kit, you can add any fire pit media you’d like for a custom burning display. Some of the most popular media styles include lava rocks, fire pit glass, and outdoor gas logs. For a more in-depth look at fire pit media, check out our buying guide.

Choose between a standard match-lit ignition system or upgrade to a remote-controlled electronic ignition system. With an electronic system, you can pair a handheld remote to your fire pit to turn it on and off from the comfort of your seat.

This pre-engineered kit from FireRock is low-maintenance, extremely durable, safe, and easy to assemble. Its modular design takes the guesswork out of building a backyard fire pit from scratch, making your DIY home project a breeze.

Fire Pit Design Tips

💡Create a Defined Fire Pit Area: Use pavers, decorative stones, or pea gravel to outline your fire pit area. This helps with drainage and gives the space a finished look.

💡Add Lighting: String lights or solar-powered lanterns enhance the ambiance and keep your outdoor space usable after sunset.

💡Comfortable Seating: Create a cozy outdoor seating area that can be used for both relaxation and entertaining. Adirondack chairs are a classic choice, as well as sofas, sectionals, stools, and benches. You can even find modular outdoor furniture, allowing you to rearrange your space to fit a variety of occasions.

💡Safety First: As with any home improvement project, safety is key! Make sure you have the proper PPE before you start your project, like safety goggles, gloves, and protective clothing. You’ll also need to make sure you’re following your local fire codes. Some cities are strict about the use of fire pits and you may need a permit before you build one.
